I've had a facebook account for a few years and absolutely love using it! It's a great way to keep in contact with old friends but also get to know new friends! Some of my classmates and I have already added each other as friends - it's a nice way to get in touch with each other regarding homework or classes notes. One of my classmates and I have been writing back and forth to help each other answer questions for one class and help each other with hard to understand material.
I also created an account on thisisai.com to hopefully meet and get to know other AI students in my program and others. I've tried to keep my facebook account up to date with activites and work experience so if a potential (or current) employer should happen to see my profile they will get a general idea who I am. I like to keep my personal info on my profile private but do show general info.
I have a few friends I have never actually met; we had common interests and worked for the same company but in different departments. It's a nice way to hear about things going on in other areas of the company or even find out about job openings.
I think professional networking is different from social networking in the respect that you are making connections with people that can potentially help you in your career. That may include helping you find a new job, tell you about a new technology, or help solve problems. It's a great way to get your name out there so you have contacts and can be a contact if someone is in need.
